why are people surprised Gorillaz incorporated rap into their music? They've been doing this. . .
Dirty Harry was a great example
I mean, Clint Eastwood has rap
@qwerty Ikr they've never had anyone rap in their songs
Yeah exactly it's not like there was a rap verse on one their hit songs or anything lol
I know they done it in Clint Eastwood
3 years in the future, song is still more relevant than ever.
Same with let me out
wait it’s been three years that makes me feel old
💀
5 now lol
2022 and the song is still surprisingly relevant
This song hits different with everything thats been happening in 2020 huh
@goblin " where you can live your dreams long as you dont look like me be a puppet on a string hangin from a fuckin tree " your joking right???
@Carli Carson nah that shit slaps
2022 now 😬
Not only they sing, they read😔📚💣😷👽🔥😈🌋🌪️🌊
@goblin how???
If you feel uncomfortable when you hear the lyrics that means it’s working
it's not working
Yes
Amen
@Dylan Cloete someone who has been speaking English all their life
@Kitcat hello what is a native speaker?
the gorillaz fans who disliked this song and the rest of humanz for "being too political" are just realizing how relevant these songs are now. this isnt about politics anymore, this is more than that.
nice pfp
i just dont like the album cuz alot of the songs suck ass 🤷🏽♂️, a big majority of the instrumentals are hard to listen to
Ikr I mean friking plastic beach was all about the environment
Gorillaz isn't only 1 Genre... *THEY'RE ALL THE GENRES*
what genre you wanna be? gorillaz: yes
I NEED them to do hyperpop
So....they’re Alternative.
@Taylon Retto I think it's been covered one way or another by Damon
“You can live your dreams long as you don’t look like me” Man. That hurt, especially now.
But black people can be successful and live they're dreams
@plagman people got tired…
Gorillaz: *make political music* Everyone: ok, cool Gorillaz, later: *make political music* Everyone: why did you have to get political? Gorillaz: *visible confusion*
It’s the effect of trumpism
@MaxxVII yeah, though when I listened to it, it’s a very good and nice tune, though the lyrics are very strong and verbal compared to what I know of their other songs.
ni idea bro
Do their fans not like them political? I've never heard of this. This album is one of their best imo. Plus I've always thought of them this way since they came out.
That "puppet hanging from a tree" line gives me insane chills every single time
Pinocchio
@orion the puppet line and the one before make you sink with how real it got and the stream is a cathartic release. Love it
@jd1782 lol everybody knows the meaning, thats why its giving people chills
@mrsprouthead yeah especially the meaning behind it, this song is about race, clearly. "Be a puppet on a string hanging from a fucking tree" means being a puppet to America and being linched, proves even more after the line "you can live your dreams as long as you dont look like me"
@orion prolly the mix of the two things tbh
Gorillaz: makes music about race and politics Everyone: this is very much adequate Gorillaz: makes another song with the same theme Everyone: ᵖᵉᵃᶜᵉ ʷᵃˢ ⁿᵉᵛᵉʳ ᵃ ᵒᵖᵗⁱᵒⁿ
@Matthew Djingarov thats not in the song, thats in the lore.
@Alpha Lax oh yeah I’m pretty sure Clint Eastwood is just about random stuff like introducing the band or talking about the musical enterprise, theres a lot of different meanings to the lyrics so i suggest you look some up :)
@Skywalking Studioz i was talking about Clint Eastwood not dirty harry
@TAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa are you going to act like we literally didnt have an entire character in phase I built around rap who made two of the best songs gorillaz ever made that people are still trying to get back?
This is so painfully accurate to everything going on right now.
It was also accurate to thing happening 3 years ago oof
For real. When I heard about the riots and everything, Humanz instantly came to my mind.
*If 2020 was a song, this will be it.* Edit: *Wow never thought this comment would get 200 likes*
Your true
Because you're speaking facts
Getting close to 2k bud
now it has 1.6K
wow this comment has way more than 200 likes, lies, deception
Everyone is talking about how political this is but no one is talking about how much of a banger this is
@H00plaDeeznuts how tf do you see a trooper early enough to not get pulled at that speed
This is in my bop playlist on Spotify
This and "Rock the House" are tied for my Favorite songs from Gorillaz
Fax
@NOVAz same
this song will be played during the revolution.
I concur
It will not
@Littlecrowraven Is sad All Ohioans are equal
Oh shit
This feels like a song that should be associated with today’s events
Humanz is SO much better in retrospect. It was so explicit and chaotic we all thought Gorillaz lost their touch, but really they were ahead of the curve. It was almost like a warning, and we're living Humanz right now.
we were living Humanz in 2015-2017, this album was specifically about that period. It just stays relevant because all those trends are accelerating.
@Tubbo Lard this didnt happen to Demon Days, Plastic Beach, Song Machine, The Now Now, or even the fall lol. Just Humanz.
@Elijah Gavin true.
@blahinthe not at all, the subject material was still just as relevant during release it’s just that you might be more aware of it now
I find it crazy how Humanz came out THREE YEARS ago it still feels so new to me
now five years
Now four years.
Lyrics: You are now tuned into the tomb of Jehova Play my tunes loud enough to shake the room, what's the hold up? Heard the world is ending soon I assumed that they told ya They tryna dinosaur us So now it's time to go up The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The roof is on fire She wet like Barbra Streisand Police everywhere It's like a nigga killed a white man I just wanna find a baby mama 'fore the night end So don't be coming 'round Vince On that batter ram shit On that 911 shit Need a misses brown as Missy I can have some fun with Them slave bones make Grace Jones Don't stop, bitch, stay focused They hated on us since days of Moses Let my people go crazy Them stars falling, don't chase 'em The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) Attack on Iraq It's on a line Typing it fast Then it's slipping my mind Oh, when I'm drunk I'm spirited back I fall in a fire then I save myself Then I get advantage 'Cause the feeling's so raw In these times of sedition Well, nothing is dull And I'm moving into stillness And recalling it all And I'm a lover, just a lover, just a lover, just a lover, just a- The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) All these liberated women sitting in my lap I'm finna catch a body like I got a gun and badge I'm finna turn Obama to my patna 'fore he dash Pull up to the pad, wipe my ass with the flag I'm just playing, baby, this the land of the free Where you can get a Glock and a gram for the cheap Where you can live your dreams long as you don't look like me Be a puppet on a string, hanging from a fucking tree (Aghh!) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher) The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
1:53 to 2:36 is probably my favourite part of the song. The lyrics hit like a fuckin bullet.
This song hits diffy after ahmaud and George floyd. Rest in paradise my brothers..
@Random Account oh am sorry
@doting O what
Georgenotfound???
God, Damon, his band and his featured artists are profoundly talented. Been a fan for 13 years and not a single song of theirs gets old. They really can produce any track they want and I'm pretty sure that's the essence of Song Machine. So versatile, always fresh and unique but somehow always remain true to themselves in sound and style. INCREDIBLE
Song aged like actual wine, it’s insane. I actually like this song more in 2021
Even if I don't like a Gorillaz song one day, if I listen to it enough it gets better. They seem to have this effect and I have no idea why.
EXACTLY
Weepinq me with Saturnz barz because the rappers in it kind of got me off track because it is kind of weird
that happened to me with Andromeda lol
Same here.
Weepinq that's how I was when I first listened too the album now I LOVE IT
i usually would never like songs like this but this one just hits different man
Same here
Vince Staples absolutely killed this track.
This shit is fire, and it’s surprisingly underrated compared to any other song. ❤️🔥❤️🔥
ATTENTION! IF YOUR GOING TO PROTEST REMEMBER THIS: COVER YOUR FACE AND HIDE ANY TATOOS,BIRTHMARKS,ETC. IF YOUR HIT BY TEAR GAS DONT USE MILK FOR YOUR EYES ONLY USE MILK FOR YOUR NOSE AND MOUTH USE WATER FOR YOUR EYES. DONT LOOT. HELP OTHERS AND REMEMBER WHAT YOUR PROTESTING FOR AND STAY PREPARED WITH A WATER BOTTLE AND MILK BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO STORES THAT WILL SELL IT. STAY SAFE OUT THERE AND REMEMBER BLACK LIVES MATTER. RIP GORGE FLOYD🙏
@subernog the original post is about protesting which is not a crime
Nah
People are getting mad for this song having rap, politics, guns etc. Have you not heard Dirty Harry? The guy literally talks about George Bush, race, AND the war in Afghanistan. I hate these stupid "true Gorillaz fans" who think if the song doesn't sound like Feel Good Inc. or Clint Eastwood, it's trash. Gorillaz survives by having many different types of music merged together.
@carnifex do you not know what gatekeeping is or something? You sound just like the person who said a comedian was gatekeeping dads because they posted about their dead dad on fathers day we never said you had to like the song or what it means the comments were simply saying that other songs are more obviously political and no one says shit till (it's a black man rapping them) now
Do people not realize what gorillaz politics are and what they have been from the start in clint Eastwood del gives examples quite clearly
That’s all absolutely true, but still I can’t get myself to like that song.
i feel like i never liked clint east wood i mean it did made me discover gorillaz and it was a good song but imo clint east wood is just average
Dirty Harry and I think Feel Good are songs that are obvious but somehow people still get offended or upset about them
I really love this song. Why? Because when I hear Gorillaz songs at random, every time when some sad/quiet song plays like Amarillo or Busted and Blue plays, I WANT the next song to be Ascension. I really want someone suddenly screaming in my ear after those slow sad music. The Album version starts directly with the rap/vocals. Its such a high contrast and I love that.
2017: "Hmm, song has a good message, but It can't be as bad as they're saying it is right now." 2020: *"O h . . ."*
@Herpn Derpn literally
It has been a lot worse than this.... People forget too easy.
Always been a gorillaz fan and the song's got a good beat. A bit repetitive on the chorus but has a good flow overall. Not so sure why some would be upset with it being political. Music, after all, is art and art is freedom of expression. They've always been a bit political and touching subjects that effect us everyday. My opinion that it's important to have diversity, transparency, and edge.
2:07 wow. This song is so fucking good. The lyrics are just.... wow
This song still slaps in 2021
yep
Can confirm 👍
“Ascension” deals with topics such as inequality and racism. Ascension means “to rise to an important position / a higher level,” so it is a possibility Gorillaz and Vince Staples want everyone to be treated equal, and spread love and not hate.
Ascension is also partially a critique on self-destructive aspects of urban "gansta" culture as well
@NOVAz It truly is… and it’s nice to see someone doing his research ;D
That is the genius intro if the song? 😂
The art is always just ✨ perfect✨
muito bommm

"BE A PUPPET ON A STRING HANGING FROM A FUCKING TREE" We got people being literally lynched right now, this is insane! Vince saw this way ahead of everyone, how could these lyrics be so realistic?? GENIUS!
this isn’t a rude remark of a reply, but that’s because it’s happened even before now. it wasn’t exactly predicting the events you refer to
God this song so powerful, one of my favorites from gorillaz
A few years ago, I used to love this song so much, I set it as my wake up alarm. Big mistake. Now I can’t stop myself from tensing up every time it blares out from one of my playlists 😅😭 Still a great song tho!
This song was dope when it dropped and it's still super dope. Gives you a crazy feeling. Vince staples is dope and Gorillaz will always be dope. This whole album is amazing.
why are you guys so pressed? this song is fire
It slaps
Exactly it sounds good asfff

@Gr eg if you like their older style of music better, then just go listen to their older albums 🏌️

Sin duda Una de las mejores canciones de Gorillaz

I've loved the Gorillaz since 2000 when I found quite by accident the Tomorrow comes Today EP they have stayed on the cutting edge. I hope they never change.
Muito top
This song is oddly underrated like I feel it would be more popular here in America. Especially rn.
God this song is so good
Anyone else get a chill every time that scream plays?
@ToasterRoast Did you just reply to your alt

this song makes me chills down my spine when i saw the lyrics
2020 and it still gives me chills
How did I not like this song when it came out but now it’s one of my most played songs on Spotify 😩
Ascension has to have the volume at full blast, no exceptions.
This was a really good collaboration. I want to see another one with Vince in the future.
The rythm: 💃🏻🕺🏻👯♀️ The lyrics: 🤬💀👦🏾
Was bumping this album all day during my finals period. Brings back so many memories....

Gorillaz 👌 👏 😍 👍🏻 🥰
*I'm just playing baby, this the land of the free* *Where you can get a Glock and a gram for the cheap* *Where you can live your dreams 'long you don't look like me* *Be a puppet on a string hanging from a fucking tree*
One of those songs I didn't understand until I grew up. Still too relevant.
I like how we instantly know when Damon is about to sing.
I’ve been searching this song for years...IT IS SO GOOD!!
This song took me a few listens to really get into, just like Feel Good Inc. and Souk Eye.
Im just vibing in my room with my new light that flashes with the beat
GORILLAZ AND VINCE STAPLES??? WHAT THE FUCK WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE
agreed
bro I felt the same way
Definetly a wonderful time.
vince fucking stables thanks lol been driving me insane
Tommy exactly G
mis respetos 👏👏👏👊👊
This song always meant something, but right now this will be the theme to the revolution
Revolution?
Im not a Gorillaz fan, but this song is fire
This song hits so fucking true today. It’s become my favorite repeat jam 👍🏽🤘
For those of you complaining about Vince Staples, I think he was chosen because he matches their vibe as an alternative rap artist. In fact, most of his music he makes is actually sad/fucked up/scary and its not really radio music. He is quoted in an interview saying he hates rap music even though he is a rapper. I think Damon Albarn loves working with unconventional artists and Vince was one of the choices. yes his lyrics are a bit more condescending/violent than perhaps Del the Funky Homosapien, but a lot of the lyrics are real, commenting on the prevalence of racism and violence in contemporary society.
Del was amazing
i get your point but still think they could of done alot better
+ObliviousCrow this nigga called vince staples trash lol. What's next you're gonna say Draam, Pusha T, Kanye West, Aesop Rock, Joey, Denzel Curry are trash too, Lol?
+ObliviousCrow ok well who is a good rapper then?
Idk what it is but this is the most underrated song imo great beat I love it
2D’s voice flows so good with this beat, and the overall mood of the song. I like how it’s short so then you cherish it kinda more. Also when the beat switches and he says “ all this liberated women sitting on my lap “, it changes the tune also and it flows really good.
